LANSING (AP) — Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm plans to issue an executive order making budget cuts next week.

The Democratic governor wrote a letter to lawmakers late Friday saying her budget director will unveil proposed spending reductions Wednesday.

State officials have concluded tax revenues will be $540 million less than earlier projections.

Money left over from last budget year will lessen the problem, but the state's general fund still will be short an estimated $240 million this fiscal year.

The House and Senate appropriations committees must approve the executive order for it to take effect.

Tax revenues are down because the economy is struggling, especially the auto industry.
