Sugar cream pie gets support as Indiana's pie

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Senate has sweetened its day by adopting a resolution that seeks to designate the sugar cream pie as the official state pie.

The pie is believed to have been created in the early 1800s by Quakers who settled on farms along the eastern border of Indiana, including the cities of Winchester, Richmond and New Castle.

The pie, similar to custard pie, is the best seller of the decades-old Wick's Pies company in Winchester and is sold in 25 states.

Wick's Pies brought scores of the pies to the Statehouse on Thursday for people to enjoy for free.

The House could also pass the nonbinding resolution, which urges lawmakers to pass a law giving the pie official state status.
