ENGLISH, Ind. (AP) — Former state Rep. Dennie Oxley, who gave up his legislative seat to run last year as the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following a southern Indiana car crash.

Oxley, 38, was arrested Friday night after his vehicle struck a parked car in the Crawford County town of Taswell, said Chief Deputy Andy Beals of the sheriff's department.

Oxley, who was traveling with a passenger, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated while endangering a person and driving with a blood-alcohol content of greater than 0.15 percent, Beals said.

The state's legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

Oxley was later released from the county jail and he did not need to be hospitalized. Beals declined to discuss details of Oxley's arrest, including his exact blood-alcohol content.

"Right now the sheriff says that he doesn't want to release any more information until the official charges are brought by the prosecutor," he said.

Oxley said in a statement Monday that he "made an error in judgment" but expressed relief that no one was injured in the crash.

"I know that I have let folks down. I simply want them to know that I will work every day to earn back their confidence," his statement said.

A former teacher and school administrator, Oxley now works for the Indiana House as an adviser to the Democratic caucus.

He ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor on a ticket with Democrat Jill Long Thompson after stepping down from the seat he had held since 1998. Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels was re-elected to a second term in the November election.

Oxley's father, also named Dennie Oxley, was elected to replace his son in the House.
