PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A funeral director's involvement with the end of one life may have led to the saving of another.

Steve Langeland was driving back Tuesday from a burial at Lakewood Cemetery in Ottawa County's Park Township when he saw that a vehicle had gone off the road and struck a mailbox.

As he got closer, he noticed the driver slumped over the steering wheel. Langeland got out of his vehicle and saw that the driver wasn't breathing, so he called on some emergency training that he received 17 years ago while in college and started administering CPR.

"He needed help, and no one was there. So you just do what you need to do," Langeland told The Holland Sentinel. "I'd do it again. I wouldn't even think about it."

An accident report filed with the Ottawa County sheriff's office identifies the driver as Paul Edelman, 69, of Holland. He was taken to Holland Hospital, where he still was a patient on Wednesday.

The hospital would not release his condition, citing patient-confidentiality laws.

Sheriff's Lt. Steve Kempker said the driver appeared to have suffered a medical problem before veering off the road and striking a mailbox.

As Langeland was administering CPR, an ambulance happened by that had not been dispatched to the scene and was not en route to another emergency. He flagged down the ambulance for help.

A few moments later, three sheriff's deputies showed up. The driver started breathing again while inside the ambulance.

Langeland said he felt afterward that his CPR skills might be rusty.

"I might take a refresher course," he said.
