INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Mitch Daniels says he supports a proposal to limit smoking statewide. An amended House bill would ban smoking in most public places except casinos and some bars and hotels. The original version of the proposal would have made no exceptions.

Daniels said Friday that he wasn't surprised the bill was watered down. He said he accepts compromise as the price of progress.

Daniels says he would sign the legislation if it makes it through the General Assembly, but there's one part of the bill he wants to see changed.

The bill would allow communities to pass more restrictive smoking bans as long as they were approved by 2010. Daniels says local governments should be able to enact tougher restrictions whenever they want.
