COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A 17-year-old apparently was wearing ear phones as he walked home along railroad tracks and didn't hear an approaching Amtrak train, which struck and killed him.

The Galesburg-Augusta High School student got off a school bus and was heading home when the train hit him about 4 p.m. Tuesday in Comstock Township, just east of Kalamazoo.

The Kalamazoo County sheriff's department says witnesses saw Alan Eaton-Chandler wearing what appeared to be earphones while walking with his back to the train. It says he didn't react to the train's whistle.

The eastbound was heading from Chicago to Detroit and was traveling at 79 miles per hour.
