TAMARACK CITY, Mich. (AP) — An 80-year-old man died in a house fire in the Upper Peninsula village of Tamarack City, and his dog perished by his side.

The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton says Joseph Schmitt died in the fire early Tuesday.

His 48-year-old son, David Schmitt, escaped by jumping from the second story. He is in stable condition at an area hospital.

Firefighters tell WLUC-TV flames were shooting out of several windows by the time they arrived around 2:30 a.m.

Joseph Schmitt was a member of the Tamarack City Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years. His son also is a member.

The state fire marshal's office says the cause remains undetermined because extensive damage is making it hard to investigate.
