FLORA, Ind. (AP) — Police say a pickup truck hit a horse and buggy on a northern Indiana highway, killing the driver and the animal.

Police say the driver, 64-year-old Steven L. Royer of Camden, was thrown from the buggy and killed when the accident occurred about noon Monday on Indiana 75 near Flora.

Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy John Chapman says the truck's driver, 87-year-old John T. Justice of rural Logansport, didn't see the buggy as he came up behind it and struck it in the rear.

Royer was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple blunt force trauma. The horse also died.

Justice was not injured.

Police say Royer was a member of the Old German Baptist Brethren.
