CHEBOYGAN, Mich. (AP) — A deer hunter who accidentally fired into a Cheboygan County day care center and grazed two children has been ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Forty-three-year-old Crystal Ann Sherwood of Benton Township was sentenced Tuesday. She pleaded no contest March 18 to discharging a firearm at a building, a felony.

Circuit Judge Scott Pavlich gave Sherwood a one-year delay of sentence. If her record stays clean, the charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor.

No prison time was imposed.

Authorities say Sherwood fired her rifle Nov. 20 in a field more than 400 yards from the day care center. The bullet pierced a window sill and ricocheted through two playrooms.

It nicked two children on the floor. They were treated at a hospital and released.
