MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — A former Detroit-area culinary arts teacher accused of sex acts with two students on a boat has been sentenced to probation on lesser charges.

The Detroit News reports 32-year-old Melissa Lavender was sentenced Wednesday in Macomb County Circuit Court to five years' probation.

She pleaded guilty last month to two counts of attempted aggravated stalking of a victim less than 18 years of age. She also gave up her teaching certificate.

Police say the former South Lake High School teacher inappropriately touched two male students, then 16 and 17, during a June 26 party on a boat.

Lavender, who is married with two children, originally was charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
