WADSWORTH, Ill. (AP) — A 14-year-old north suburban Chicago girl is in critical condition after the all-terrain vehicle she was driving collided with another piloted by her stepbrother.

Lake County Sheriff's police say the Wadsworth girl and 11-year-old boy were riving the ATVs Tuesday evening when the two vehicles made contact. Officials say the children were thrown to the pavement while the ATVs rolled over.

Authorities say the boy and girl were wearing helmets, but police are investigating whether they were strapped.

Police say the girl was airlifted to a hospital with head trauma. The boy had minor scratches.
