ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Royal Oak police say they've removed 32 malnourished dogs from a filthy, dirt-floored industrial building.

Lt. Gordon Young says the six adults and 26 puppies are mostly Chihuahuas and Pomeranians. He says the dogs were exposed to oil and gas in the suburban Detroit building.

A lawyer for Traci Nelson of Birmingham says the dogs were recently acquired by her business, Itsy Bitsy Dog Rescue. Eric Buikema tells The Daily Tribune his client "found a temporary solution and she was improving the environment."

Police say the animals removed Monday were confined to a 100-square-foot area.

Young says the owner lacked city permission to house the dogs at the building and says she'll be questioned.
