DELTON, Mich. (AP) — The longtime Barry Township police chief was found dead Wednesday behind police headquarters in Delton, about 18 miles northeast of Kalamazoo.

Marshal "Mark" Kik, 52, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Barry County Undersheriff Robert Baker. His body was found Wednesday morning by sheriff's deputies.

"He was well-liked and respected and known throughout the county, not just in this township, but the county, and he will be missed," Baker told The Grand Rapids Press. "It's a hard time for everybody."

In a statement, township supervisor Wesley Kahler said Kik served as police chief for 29 years and will be missed.

"Mark was truly part of this community," Kahler said. "Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts go out to Mark's family at this very sad time."
