More Ind. high schoolers taking Ivy Tech classes

NDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ivy Tech Community College has seen a big jump in the number of high school students enrolled in dual credit courses that allow students to simultaneously earn high school and college credits.

Dual enrollment is up almost 44 percent this year. More than 16,000 high school students took dual credit classes, which are often taught in high schools during the regular school day.

Ivy Tech estimates that the credits earned this year will save Indiana parents nearly $8 million in college tuition costs.

Ivy Tech President Thomas Snyder says exposing students to college in high school could open up the prospect of a higher education for kids who might not otherwise consider it.
