WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A man named "police officer of the year" for the North Chicago Police Department has been charged with pistol-whipping the police chief in nearby Waukegan.

Carl Sain is charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault in the alleged attack on Chief Artis Yancey.

Lake County State Attorney Michael Waller says the alleged beating occurred last week in the home of Sain's estranged wife.

Waller says the 45-year-old Sain punched Yancey and hit him repeatedly with his handgun. He says Sain broke bones in Yancey's face.

Sain has been released on $75,000 bond and is expected back in court Wednesday. His telephone number is unlisted.

North Chicago police didn't immediately return a telephone message.
