INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana hunters bagged a near-record number of birds during wild turkey season this spring.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the spring harvest of 12,993 fowl was the second highest since modern turkey seasons began 40 years ago and exceeded the 2008 harvest by 789 birds.

Adult gobblers represented 81 percent of the total taken in the regular season, April 22 to May 10, and the youth season, April 18 and 19. A total of 978 turkeys were taken during the youth season. Turkeys were taken in 88 of the 92 counties open to hunting this spring.

DNR wildlife biologist Steve Backs says the higher numbers probably were likely due to a general statewide increase in the turkey population and a steady growth in the number of turkey hunters.
