VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — An 18-year-old Indiana man has told a judge he used the hammer to kill a 42-year-old store clerk during a robbery.

Bruce Guess of Chesterton admitted the killing of Barbara J. Heckman of Portage during a Dec. 19 robbery. The confession in a courtroom in Valparaiso comes as part of a plea deal. He faces up to 60 years in prison for the murder and 50 for the robbery when sentenced Sept. 28.

Guess says he and 20-year-old Steven Jordan entered the Luke One Stop store in Liberty Township and Jorden was supposed to hit Heckman with a mini-sledge hammer while Guess distracted her.

He says Jorden didn't hit her, so he took the hammer and hit her himself.
