Indiana State Police said a Valparaiso woman was driving north in the southbound lane of I-65 near the U.S. 30 exit early Friday, causing a head-on collision that seriously injured herself and the other driver.

Police said Jennifer Meece, 36, who was taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital in Merrillville with massive internal injuries, was cited for driving while intoxicated and driving the wrong way on a one-way road.

The police report indicates Meece’s vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by Guy Vafiadis, 55, of Merrillville, at 2:15 a.m. He told police he did not remember seeing Meece’s vehicle and police are unsure if Meece’s headlights were turned on.

Vafiadis was also taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital with jaw and ankle injuries, according to police.

No information was available from the hospital on either person’s conditions.
