SALEM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The Washtenaw County sheriff's department wants to know who made off with more than 200 tons of road salt.

The Ann Arbor News reports the salt valued at $10,000 was stolen from a county road commission storage facility in Salem Township within the past week.

Police discovered the salt was missing on Monday. They say thieves broke into the facility unit by going through a locked fence sometime between July 1 and Monday.

Sheriff's Sgt. Lisa King tells WDIV-TV in Detroit those responsible must have needed at least a dozen dump trucks or loads to haul away the salt.

The salt is used to de-ice roads in the winter.
