REMUS, Mich. (AP) — Police in central Michigan say an 18-year-old man died after he briefly went under water while swimming with friends in a Broomfield Township lake.

Matthew Joseph Boles of Mt. Pleasant was pronounced dead Saturday evening at Central Michigan Community Hospital after he became stricken in Hall's Lake in western Isabella County near Remus.

Isabella County police told The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant that Boles swam once across the lake and was on his way back when friends following him in a paddle boat saw him wave his arms and go under the water.

Boles was only under the water for five or ten seconds when his friends pulled him out.

Because he had been under water such a short time, an autopsy will be performed to determine if he died from some medical condition.
