DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Police in Dayton, Ohio say a 2-year-old girl and 8-month-old boy have been found crying inside a large trash bin, about 13 hours after their mother reported them missing. She told police her boyfriend fled with them after a fight.

Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl says the children were thirsty, hungry and dirty, but appear to be in remarkably good condition.

The children were found in a large plastic trash receptacle outside an electrical repair business. An employee arrived at work after picking up some supplies and thought he heard the sound of crying. He and another worker found the children after opening the lid of the trash receptacle.

The children have been taken to a hospital. They were reported missing Sunday night by their mother.
