EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A man in southwestern Illinois is accused of beating his roommate at an assisted living center four times with a hammer.

Madison County prosecutors have charged 79-year-old James Sendaldi Jr. of New Douglas with aggravated battery.

The 69-year-old victim was treated at a hospital and released.

Sheriff's Capt. Brad Wells says he doesn't know the reason for Tuesday's attack at the Hitz Memorial Assisted Living Facility in Alhambra.

Wells says the hammer was sitting out because construction work was being done at the site.

Sendaldi's bond was initially set $40,000, but he was released on his own recognizance after a judge ordered him to stay away from the alleged victim.
