MARION, Ill. (AP) — A 29-year-old man from Herrin in southern Illinois has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend's toddler in 2006.

The Williamson County state's attorney's office announced the sentence on Friday.

Peter Kerrigan pleaded guilty in July to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 22-month-old Brynden Gibson. Williamson County prosecutors say Kerrigan was living with the child's mother when he allegedly shook the toddler violently. The baby died two days later at a St. Louis hospital.

Brynden's mother, Rebecca Gibson, says she doesn't think the sentence is long enough.
