MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — Police have identified the prisoner who was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy after escaping from his handcuffs and grabbing a needle in a Mount Clemens emergency room.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office on Friday identified the man as 32-year-old Jamin William Totty of Chesterfield Township.

Sheriff Mark Hackel says Totty was taken to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center on Thursday after complaining of a medical issue while being transported from court in Roseville to the county jail.

Totty had been arrested on warrants including probation violation.

Hackel says Totty somehow escaped from his handcuffs and grabbed a needle before being shot and killed by a deputy. The deputy is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
