KENT, Ohio (AP) — A student at Kent State University who was severely beaten last week has died at an Ohio hospital.

Kent police say 23-year-old Christopher Kernich of Fairborn died Saturday at Akron City Hospital. Police say three males in a car nearly drove into a group of students on Nov. 15 and began assaulting them.

Two other students were assaulted but Kernich was the only one seriously injured.

Police say 20-year-old Ronald Kelly and 21-year-old Adrian Barker have been charged with felonious assault, while a third suspect remains at large.

Kernich's mother told the Daily Kent Stater newspaper that she was working in Iraq for a contractor that maintains the U.S. Embassy when she learned of her son's injuries.

Kent Police Lt. John Altomare says detectives will meet with prosecutors on Monday and more charges are possible.
