UPDATE: Two people taken to hospital after Route 220 accident in Botetourt County

Police say a vehicle overturned against a tree on Roanoke Road

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va.

Two people were hurt in an accident Monday afternoon on Route 220 in Botetourt County.

According to Virginia State Police, a 1998 Honda Civic was headed west on Gravel Hill toward Route 220 when the Civic pulled out in front of a Chevrolet Avalanche. The collision caused the Avalanche to flip and hit a tree.

Two people inside the Avalanche, 60-year-old Barry Chittum and 61-year-old Elta Chittum, were hurt and taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. They were both wearing seat belts.

The driver of the Civic was not hurt. He has been charged with failure to yield the right of way.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the accident has been cleared.

An accident has closed part of a road in Botetourt County. 

Police say a vehicle overturned and is against a tree on Roanoke Road near Gravel Hill Road.  The accident is about two miles south of Fincastle.

The right northbound lane is closed at this time. 

There is no word on any injuries.
