BEDFORD, Va. (AP) --

Backyard chickens are now legal in Bedford County.

The News & Advance reports that the Bedford County Board of Supervisors approved a zoning change Monday that allows residents to keep chickens in the backyards of urban neighborhoods and subdivisions.

The amended zoning ordinance allows up to 18 chickens. But roosters are prohibited.

Chickens must be kept in enclosed coops.

Residents must obtain a permit to keep chickens but they won't have to pay a fee.
