MOUNT SINAI, NY—
A Mount Sinai family was horrified when they walked out of their house and found that a cell tower had been constructed under the cover of darkness -- on their front lawn."I was mortified." Lori DiMarco told PIX 11 News. "My son actually took me outside at night and said Ma, dad didn't want you to see this yet, he took me outside with a flash light at night."
Just as appalled was Town Of Brookhaven Highway Superintendent John Rouse.
"It's the height of corporate arrogance," said Rouse said. "If I have to get in that truck myself and take it down, it's coming down."
As a show of force, Rouse brought out a town bucket truck and is threatening to rip down the antenna if the company that installed NextG doesn't remove it within ten days.
In a statement, NextG admitted they installed the tower without the proper permits, saying in effect that the town was taking too long to review their application.
"NextG sincerely apologizes and pledges to do it's best to ensure that this does not happen again. "
The company says it will take the tower down.
"I have two young children," said DiMarco. "They may say it's not dangerous but nobody knows yet, because this antenna system hasn't been out for that long."
After the DiMarco's complained about this cell tower on their front lawn, the town found out that 9 others had also popped up in the area, literally over night.
The town is now investigating whether or not those antenna's need to be removed as well.
