A push by the local American Red Cross to get anyone eligible to donate blood. They're offering incentives. Tuesday it was free yogurt. Red Cross organizers say every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.
"We've had a critical blood shortage since the middle of May. It's one of the worst blood shortages we've been in 15 years. So we are desparate for people to come out and donate," says Beverley Staumbaugh with the American Red Cross.
Donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with parental permission) and weigh more than 110 lbs. Red blood cells expire every 42 days and due to the high demand, the Red Cross continually asks donors to replenish the blood supply (donors can give blood every 56 days).
