Authorities say they found 49-year-old Darrell Laurence with injuries from gunfire in or near an apartment above the Cutrageous X2 barber/beauty shop at 2002 Kemble Ave.

Laurence was taken to an area hospital just after 10:30 a.m., where he was pronounced dead.

More than a dozen patrol cars blocked off streets in the area while officers looked for a suspect. No arrests had been made as of Saturday afternoon.

Authorities said a male was seen running from the scene. Police were not able to provide much of a description, only saying he was wearing a black hoodie. A black leather jacket, believed to belong to the suspect, was recovered near the scene.

Tim Corbett, commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, said Laurence lived in one of the apartments at the back of the barber shop. He did not know if the assailant and victim knew each other or what could have led to the shooting.

Corbett said the investigation is focused on a stairway at the apartment.

A homicide investigation also began on Thursday morning near the intersection of Walnut and Huron streets, where 42-year-old Andre Byrd was found shot to death. No arrests have been made.

Corbett said he did not know if the two killings were related.

Overall for the year, Saturday’s homicide was the 18th in the city limits and 22nd overall in St. Joseph County.

“One is too many,” Corbett said.
