ELKHART – Wednesday was December 12, 2012, or 12-12-12.
Many couples around the country picked the day to get married, including a couple in Elkhart.
Their wedding plans started “up in the air.”
This particular wedding took place at Elkhart’s Central Fire Station, and the time of the wedding was 12:12 p.m.
Heather Labrum walked through an honor guard of firemen, past family members to meet her husband-to-be, Lt. Dave Richter.
Early on, they were going with the idea of simple wedding in court with family members. But that changed when the nuptials ended up taking place at the top of a fire ladder truck, 100 feet in the air, with friends and family watching below.
“After talking, we wanted to do something different, unique, and we talked to the chief, and he allowed us to go up in a bucket and get married in the air, which is not your everyday occurrence,” explained Richter.
The bride, with no fear of heights, agreed.
“To be able to be up that high and be able to look down and see your family, both the immediate family and the fire family, there’s nothing like it in the world,” Heather said. “I don’t think anybody has had a chance to do this. I know especially in this area.”
“We were very excited for both of them,” said Wendy Labrum, the mother of the bride. “I think they both thought long and hard how to make this momentus for them as well as letting the family to be part of it.”
For many involved in the wedding, it was a first on a number of different levels – the bride, the groom, the families, the fire department, as well as the minister who drove here from Noblesville to perform the ceremony.
“I think it’s a good way to start out, a married couple to start out their new life together, something different,” added the groom.
The bride agreed by saying, “We will remember this always.”
After the wedding, the reception was just a short walk away, inside the apparatus bay at Central Fire Station.
Extra fire crews were on hand to handle a couple of calls while the wedding took place.
