KNOX – 14 children and 2 adults were taken to the hospital after a flat-bed truck hit a Head Start school bus in Knox Monday morning.
The accident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. CST, at Lake and Heaton Streets. Heaton is also U.S. 35.
According to witnesses on the scene, police say the driver of the truck ran a red light and hit the driver’s area of the school bus.
The children and adults on the bus who were banged up were treated at IU Health Starke Memorial System for precautionary reasons. Police say no one was seriously hurt.
IU Health Starke Hospital had issued this statement on the bus collision, saying they saw 15 children and 2 adults as a result of the accident, but late Monday afternoon lowered the count to 14 children. Hospital Marketing Director Neil Mangus says all the students were treated for minor bumps and bruises. All of the children were then released to their parents while the adults were still being looked Monday afternoon.
The school bus carried children in the Head Start program in Starke and Marshall Counties.
The driver of the flat-bed was not hurt.
Police say there were no signs of alcohol or drugs in the truck driver’s system.
