SOUTH BEND –South Bend police are investigating the possibility that alcohol may have been involved in an early morning crash.

Police say around 3 a.m., 19-year-old Matthew McCollum of South Bend lost control of his car and hit a tree. McCollum was heading north on Sunnyside crossing Bronson when it happened.

McCollum and a passenger, 37-year-old David Jastrzembski of South Bend, were both trapped inside.

Police say McCollum suffered leg and foot injuries, and Jastrzembski appears to have broken his leg and dislocated his knee.

Both were taken to the hospital.

Police say both men were wearing their seat belts, and each of their airbags deployed preventing their injuries from being more serious.

Officers drew blood from the driver to determine if alcohol was in his system, and they're waiting for toxicology results.
