BERRIEN COUNTY – Police believe alcohol played a role in an early Sunday morning crash on the U.S. 31 Bypass in Berrien County.

Police say around 2 a.m., a 2002 Mitsubishi crashed directly under the Niles Buchanan Rd. overpass in Niles Township.

They say Jennifer Scot of Galien, Mich. was driving the car. Maxwel Robinson, also of Galien, was in the front seat and was seriously hurt.

Both Scot and Robinson were taken to South Bend’s Memorial Hospital, Robinson with internal injuries, Scot with a foot injury.

Investigators say alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor.

The accident remains under investigation.
