Late Tuesday morning, WSBT first told you about a 2-year-old girl who fell from a second-story window at her Elkhart home on Monday. Her father spoke with reporter Ed Ernstes and explained how the accident occurred.
Tuesday evening, the father again talked with Ed Ernstes, giving an update on the girl's condition.
"She's been under sedation since the accident for surgery. The surgery is done and they're going to wake her up tomorrow (Wednesday) morning," her dad said. She is in "stable condition and improving. She's doing well."
The girl was initially to Elkhart General Hospital and then transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
Dad, who didn't want to be named or have his daughter named, says the girl was asleep in another room as they cleaned upstairs rooms at their home in the 500 block of Washington Street. The window was open for airing out.
The dad says they hadn't taken their eyes off her for more than 20 seconds. Their dog barking alerted them the child had crawled out the open window onto a porch roof and fell.
The father said he talked to both Elkhart Police and Indiana Department of Child Services and both agencies said the incident "was clearly an accident."
He is asking for prayers for the little girl.
