Elkhart County has seen its third death from an outbreak of fungal meningitis that's been connected to injections of a recalled back pain medication, according to a county health official.

Clinics in South Bend, Elkhart, Columbus, Evansville, Fort Wayne and Terre Haute received tainted steroids traced to the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass.

Elkhart County Health Officer Dr. Dan Nafziger says there have been 41 cases overall in the county. Although he says many cases they are seeing aren’t full-blown meningitis (meaning the infection entered the spinal cord), but localized infections at injection sites causing problems like epidural abscesses.

There have been at least 7 deaths in Indiana and 11 in Michigan.
