NEW YORK (AP) — A 3-year-old girl died at a hospital Friday after being found bleeding from puncture wounds on her face and neck in the arms of her rambling, incoherent mother.
Authorities were called to the family's Brooklyn home early Friday after a report that someone might be trying to jump off the roof.
They saw no one on the roof but noticed a trail of blood, which led them to a lower-floor apartment. Inside, they found the girl and her 29-year-old mother.
She had puncture wounds on her neck, and cuts and bruises on her body. The apartment was in disarray, a fish tank broken nearby.
The mother has been hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation.
There were no abuse allegations made and no open child welfare cases. A report was made in April 2010 after the mother got into an altercation with another person in front of her child at a shelter where they were staying, but the child was not hurt.
Police, the medical examiner and the Administration for Children's Services are investigating. The agency said in a statement that the little girl were no siblings.
