DOWAGIAC — A 13-year-old eighth-grade student at Dowagiac Middle School will be petitioned into Cass County Probate Court for allegedly taking to school what police described as an “air-soft handgun.’’
Dowagiac Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson said school staff members were notified about 8:45 a.m. Thursday about a handgun possibly being brought to the school by a student. After the staff contacted the police department’s school truancy officer, the officer responded with other officers and the staff found the gun in the student’s locker, Atkinson said.
The police chief said criminal charges are possible, even though no threats were made nor was the weapon brandished or used in a threatening manner.
