MATTAWAN, Mich. – A Van Buren County homeowner got quite a surprise when he was mowing his yard this weekend.

Police say the man, who lives on County Road 652 near Mattawan, found a 3- to 4-foot alligator in his basement window well.

Animal control officers were called into action Saturday afternoon and found the alligator in good health. The gator is believed to be 1 ½ to 2-years-old.

Police believe the gator was used as a family pet somewhere in the area and either escaped or was set free.

Animal control has the alligator.

Anyone with information pertaining to the gator’s owner is asked to contact the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 657-2006.
