NAPPANEE – A Milford toddler is improving after she and her father were hurt when their buggy was struck by a car Friday night.

It happened just before 6:30 p.m. at 5414 West, County Road 1350 North. That’s near Nappanee.

Police say 51-year-old Arlen R. Lehman was pulling out of a private driveway in a buggy. He tried to make his horse stop, but it suddenly trotted into the road and was hit by a car driven by 23-year-old Jodi R. Kauffman of Etna Green.

Kauffman told police she was approaching the driveway when she saw a horse enter the road from behind a row of trees. She braked immediately but skidded into the buggy and rolled it over onto its side.

Arlen and his 4-year-old daughter Ranae were airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

A hospital spokeswoman Sunday told WSBT Ranae has been upgraded to good condition, while Arlen was still listed as serious.

Arlen’s wife and two children, ages 10 and 11, were also inside the buggy. They were not hurt. Kauffman was also unhurt.

The horse bolted back to its stable, apparently unharmed.

Police say they don’t believe alcohol was a factor. The investigation is ongoing.
