Road maintenance crews are working non-stop trying to fill hundreds of potholes that opened up over the last week or so.
But it’s been a slow process because snow keeps getting in the way.
Their priority in recent days has been clearing the roads and making sure the drive is even possible, before making it comfortable.
“We will get to them, it's just a matter of time,” said Alex Fisher, assistant street commissioner for the City of Mishawaka, who was able to put a pothole crew on the streets Tuesday afternoon.
“A lot of times we'll have patch crews out on all three shifts and it’s not uncommon to fill the same hole on all three shifts,” he said.
The City of South Bend is also making snow clearing a priority. They hoped to have pothole crews making rounds by Wednesday, a representative said.
Tuesday was the first day in at least a week that INDOT wasn’t plowing roads non-stop, a spokesman said.
All crews are using a cold-mix of gravel, sand, and oil, to fill potholes.
“If we're lucky we can get two or three days out of it. If we get some real cold spells afterwards it’s just going to pop right back out,” said Alex Fisher, an operator who works on the Mishawaka crew.
They can’t use asphalt, a more permanent fix, until spring.
