BENTON HARBOR – Police are looking for a man who fired a gunshot in a Benton Harbor taxi and robbed the cab driver.

Officers were called to the 100 block of Bellview St. around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. They found the cab driver who had run from the scene after the shot was fired.

The cab driver described the suspect as a black man, about 5’10”, 180-190 pounds, wearing black clothes and armed with a handgun.

The taxi driver said he was dispatched to the area to pick up a person and when arriving, the suspect got into his cab, pulled a gun and demanded money from the driver. During a struggle, a shot was fired inside the cab before the robber got away with an unknown amount of cash.

The cab driver also ran but was not hurt.

The Benton Harbor K-9 unit was called to the scene and tracked possible footprints a block or two from the armed robbery before losing the scent.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety “tip-line” at (269) 927-0293 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 342-STOP.
