Today was anything but a typical day Friday afternoon in downtown Niles. A bank robbery and bomb scare created some tense moments on Main Street. It happened at the Chemical Bank after a women handed a teller a note and said there was a bomb.
It's not what you would typically see on Main Street in Niles.
"Heard there was a robbery and heard there was a bomb threat and then saw all of the emergency responders of the building and so we didn't know exactly what was going on so we just locked our doors and held tight," said Jamie Boling, who works nearby.
Police say around 11:30 this morning a woman walked in and handed a note to the teller, demanding money. Police say she indicated there was a bomb on the drive-through side of the bank.
"Just because it scares people," said Niles police chief Jim Millin.
Once the suspect got the money, she took off on Fifth Street. Investigators didn't find anything in the drive-through, but did find a backpack in the front entranceway.
"They were able to use a robot get up to the doors, they x-rayed the package and found out that it did not contain anything explosive or anything dangerous," said Millin.
Police are not saying what was inside the backpack. Right now, they're looking over surveillance video and talking with employees. Main Street was closed for about three hours. There were ten employees inside the bank, but no customers at the time of the robbery. No one was hurt.
