SOUTH BEND — Fighting breast cancer may be one of the toughest life challenges a woman faces. That is why a local organization is doing what they can to give cancer patients a break, and to make them feel special.
Hello Gorgeous! is all about changing the way a woman fighting cancer views herself.
Xavier School of Excellence principal Barbara Huber got the surprise of a lifetime when she found out she won a day of beauty from Hello Gorgeous!
“I had no idea, and of course I have to be in charge. They said, ‘We're ready to take you.’ And I said, ‘No I'm sorry I don't have time for this,’” Huber said with a laugh.
Hello Gorgeous! whisked her away to their mobile day spa anyway. She knew she was about to get royal treatment when she saw the red carpet that led her to the spa.
“I'm going to walk every inch of this!” she quipped.
Inside, she was pampered with spa services and a new outfit.
Hello Gorgeous co-founder Kim Becker said treating women battling cancer to a makeover is her calling.
“I just truly feel this is something that's been put on my heart that I'm supposed to do,” Becker said.
She said the women they pamper are caring, and do not often take time for themselves.
“I would never spend the money on me. I would never take this much time,” said Huber. “It's not always fun, but I’ve been the rock for the whole family so i had always just wondered who's going to pamper me, and here I am, for an entire day getting pampered. It's an amazing feeling.”
Becker said they aspire to make the women feel special for a day, and to give them a 3 hour vacation from everything they are going through.
“We want this to be something she'll look back on for the course of her treatment, for one moment she just felt phenomenal,” said Becker.
For Huber, that moment came when she walked into her school with a new look...truly feeling gorgeous!
The whole makeover experience is provided to the cancer fighters at no charge. Becker said that is possible only with the help of donations and volunteers. You can learn more about Hello Gorgeous at their website, www.gorgeousgals.org.
