DOWAGIAC, Mich. – A Dowagiac man is behind bars after police say he led them on a high-speed chase before driving his car into a house.

Around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, Dowagiac police tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle for a speeding violation on East Prairie Ronde St. near McOmber St. The driver fled east and attempted to turn right onto McCleary St. Police say the car was going too fast, slid off the road into a yard and hit the front of a home in the 700 block of East Prairie Ronde St.

The driver then got out of his car and ran through several yards before he was finally captured by police.

Investigators say no one was home at the time, and there was minor damage to the foundation and front porch of the home.

The 20-year-old driver from Dowagiac was taken to Borgess/Lee Memorial Hospital and then moved to the Cass County Jail.

He’s charged with Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting and Obstructing Police, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, and Driving with No Driver License.

The man’s name is not being released pending his arraignment in district court.
