SOUTH BEND – Fire struck a home on South Bend’s near west side Monday morning.
Around 8:40 a.m., firefighters were called to 2120 Kenwood Avenue and found smoke and flames showing when they arrived on the scene.

No one was home at the time, but several cats were inside.
Fire crews were able to rescue all of the cats but one, which died.
There’s no word yet what caused the blaze.
