MISHAWAKA -- On Wednesday, the Mishawaka Common Council elected Mike Compton to serve as its president for 2013.
A Democrat who's represented the 5th District on the council for the past six years and works as business manager for the local electrical workers union, Compton said he simply hopes "to keep the council running smoothly."
It's his first time as president. Council Democrats, who hold a 5-4 majority, rotate the president's role among themselves. John Roggeman had it in 2012.
Ron Banicki, D-6th, was elected vice president.
Compton and Banicki were approved unanimously.
The council also named a new member to the city's Redevelopment Commission. The council appointed Bill Buraczewski to take the seat that Wayne Troiola has held until now. Troiola's term ended with the new year, and he didn't seek reappointment.
Buraczewski said he's a Mishawaka native who, now with four young children of his own, works as an Indiana sales manager for Sika, a global adhesives and sealants company.
He's a Democrat who worked on the campaign of council member Matt Mammolenti, D-at large, a former commission member who suggested him for the seat.
"It's a good step to see if it's something I'm interested in," Buraczewski said of this new role in government.
The council also reappointed Kris Ermeti to the six-member commission, which she joined a year ago.
Wednesday marked the first meeting of the council's newest member, Kate Voelker, whom a Republican caucus elected to replace Marsha McClure as the 4th District's representative. McClure is now a county commissioner.
The council also decided which of them would serve on the following committees. The first name in each list is chairman.
-- Budget and finance: Dale "Woody" Emmons, D-1st; Mammolenti; Mike Bellovich, R-2nd
-- Land use planning: Banicki, Voelker, Roggeman
-- Public health and safety/long-range planning: Mammolenti, Roggeman, John Reisdorf, R-3rd
-- Public improvements: Banicki, Mammolenti, Reisdorf
-- Personnel: Roggeman, Emmons, Bellovich
-- Substandard housing: Banicki, Roggeman, Voelker.
