NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP) — A Pennsylvania couple who allegedly made five of their seven children ride 400 miles in a rental truck's unheated cargo area has been formally arraigned in Indiana on neglect charges.
Forty-one-year-old David K. Detjen and his 40-year-old wife, Rebecca S. Detjen, remain jailed on $10,000 bond following Friday's initial hearing.
The Fairmount City, Pa., couple was arrested Wednesday night near New Castle after police allegedly found one of the couple's adult children and four of their minor children in the box-filled back of a rented moving truck. David Detjen told police he's unemployed and was moving his family to California in hopes of finding work.
Henry County Prosecutor Joseph Bergacs tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/YBmGrd ) he feels sympathy for the family's plight but believes the charges are warranted.
