SOUTH BEND – A BMX biker participating in the contest at Brett Banasiewicz's weekend competition at "the Kitchen" in South Bend crashed on Sunday.
The crash happened around 3:15 p.m. at Banasiewicz's 2nd annual "Stay Strong Pro-am BMX event."
The competition resumed after it happened.
Brett's mom, Lisa, went with the injured biker to the hospital after the competitor landed a trick wrong and was initially unconscious. But the young teen was awake before he was taken away in the ambulance.
“Unfortunately, I knew what they were feeling, and I was here for them, and I was concerned for their son, and I just wanted to tell them that I was behind them,” Lisa said.
Another rider involved in a separate accident broke her collarbone on Sunday.
Banasiewicz was in town for the weekend competition. It was his first public appearance back in South Bend since he crashed while practicing in Virginia in August. He has been in an intensive rehab therapy program for the last several months.
