MISHAWAKA — John Gleissner, a 23-year veteran on the Mishawaka Common Council, began Monday as its president for the fourth time.

The council voted Gleissner, D-at large, into the one-year office at its first meeting of 2011.

He gladly accepted, saying, “I enjoy government.”

Looking around the City Hall, Gleissner could still envision the gym, cafeteria and classrooms where he’d taught when this building looked so different — back when it was Bingham Elementary School. That was his first teaching assignment with Mishawaka schools in 1967. He retired as a social studies teacher in 2005 and continues to substitute teach at St. Bavo and St. Joseph schools in the city.

He said none of his terms as president have been in a row.

He takes over from Dale “Woody” Emmons, D-1st.

The council also voted Mike Compton, D-5th, as vice president. He is beginning his fifth year on the council. Gleissner served as vice president last year.

The council also voted to reappoint Wayne Troiola and Matt Mammolenti to the city’s Redevelopment Commission.

Emmons will be the council’s representative in the Fire Platoon Study Committee, the council voted. He also will be chairman of the council’s Budget and Finance Committee, with Compton and Mike Bellovich, R-2nd, serving with him.

Ross Deal will be chairman of the Land Use Planning Committee, serving with Emmons and Marsha McClure, R-4th.

Deal also will be chairman of the Public Health and Safety/Long Range Planning Committee, which includes Compton and McClure.

John Roggeman, D-at large, will be chairman of the Public Improvements Committee, which includes Ron Banicki, D-6th, and McClure.

Compton will be chairman of the Personnel Committee, which includes Roggeman and Bellovich.

Banicki will be chairman of the Sub-Standard Housing Committee, serving with Gregg Hixenbaugh, D-at large, and Bellovich.
